Volunteer Your Time
Volunteers are very important to our organization and quality of our facilities. There is always things that can be done around our facilities in order to make it a better place to visit and learn for our visitors and members to enjoy. There are a number of ways you can become involved in our organization. You can make a difference in the way we carry out our mission to educate others about the nature and history of our region and provide a place where a part of the natural Texas High Plains is accessible to the general public - preserved and maintained.
- Join other volunteers for Volunteer Workday. - This activity will be listed in our Events Calendar - usually on the second Saturday of each month.
- Come out and work when it is convenient for you. - Just use our Contact Us page to let us know you want to volunteer. Or call our main number at 806-352-6007 and press option 1 when you would like to come out.
- Are you a subject matter expert in natural sciences, nature photography, history or natural resource management? - We are always looking for people who would like to present a program to the public on subjects related to our mission. Contact Us!
- Give us some feedback. - Contact Us with your ideas and suggestions you think will make us a better facility or organization.
Current Volunteer Work Suggestions
- Pick up trash. - This can be done anytime you walk our nature trails. Trash is sometimes left by visitors but most of it blows in on our gusty West Texas winds. We especially need help right now to pick up on litter along old Soncy Road!
- Help trim or remove invasive plants. - Especially Mesquite right now. We have many small trees starting to grow in our nature trails. We can provide the tools you need to remove or trim them back.
- Haul or spread wood chip mulch. - We need to haul in some wood chips from the chipping site nearby and you will need to have a truck to haul it for us. After we get some hauled in we will need to get it spread out in areas where it is very much needed.
- Suggestions for projects related to Citizen Science. - We will soon launch a project to gather information and photographs of all the flora and fauna observed at our facility. A big task we will need lots of help with. Contact Us with your ideas about other Citizen Science projects we can work on.
- Report your nature sightings. - Tell us about the interesting nature related observations you have made recently. Observations of plants or wild critters and insects at our facility or other locations on the Texas High Plains. Bird migrations will be starting soon as cooler weather arrives. Report your current observations on our Contact Us page or in the comments section of our Wild Sightings pages.
- We could use some help sharpening up some of our tools such as pruners and hoes. We have the files for sharpening them up. Join me out on the shady veranda and we can get it done!

- Rabbit feed - We are currently out.
- Cracked corn for deer and turkey - We have enough for now.

Many Thanks for Recent Donations
September 10, 2011 - Thanks to Brittani Sena, Lori Peterson and Leo Reed for donating some time and energy during the cool morning hours for Volunteer Workday.
September 7, 2011 - Thanks to Leo Reed for bringing out more bird feed, purchasing fence mending tools to repair damage to our fence along Tascosa road and then donating the tools to WBNC for continuing maintenance on our fences. Leo even helped to repair the damaged fence which a certain entertainment and Internet communications company refused to accept responsibility for. The fence was completely destroyed during the burial of a new communications cable.
August 29, 2011 - Thanks to Leo Reed and John Attebury who brought us some wild bird feed. We placed placed a bird feeder donated by Nola and Jim Hagemeier near our solar powered water well and Prairie Dog Town Trail rest stop which doubles as a photo blind on Aug. 29.
Guest passes will be available to volunteers and donors to enjoy our nature trails with family and friends. Use them yourself or give them to someone you know would enjoy a relaxing walk on several miles of nature trails on the Texas High Plains.
